South Spring Qualifier

The team attended the South Spring Qualifier this past weekend and while we came out lower in the rankings, we came out on top with attitude! While we didn't qualify for the America's Trophy regatta later this month, we were able to get a lot of great races in and it was a great learning experience for all. Congrats to the University of Virginia, William and Mary and Hampton University for qualifying for the America's Trophy, and good luck! Additionally we would like to congratulate George Washington University, Christopher Newport University and the University of Maryland for qualifying for the Leroy Grant Regatta.

American Sailing in the news!

In an article on Sail1Design.com, Team President Lisa Gabrielson discusses some of the challenges the team has faced in the past and is still facing now.

"While the Northwestern University and University of Chicago teams have had the manpower, coaches and membership numbers to keep developing, the American University sailing team has struggled to develop with the current economic situation, “Club Sailing is not a priority for the AU Athletic department in the least,” said Lisa Gabrielson, current president of the AU team. The team, who does not have their own fleet of boats, relies heavily on the support and generosity of the Georgetown and George Washington sailing teams, “both teams have huge fleets that they will let us practice on most days. Of course, this is not ideal, but we appreciate all the support we get from two other teams that are in our conference. Of course, our goal is to someday soon buy boats and we are launching a huge fundraising campaign this year to really get the ball rolling on that,” she said. Currently, the team is coach-less and does not have a faculty advisor, something that Gabrielson cites as an important way to keep some continuity with the team from year to year. However attempts to secure a faculty advisor have failed, “finding support for a team that has not won any national championships yet is hard.” According to Gabrielson, the dedicated team of 28 sailors in a campus of 6,000 undergraduates is seen as an unknown entity by most of the campus."

We only have a meeting once every two weeks, so when we do have meetings, we expect you to be there! DC Sail

DC Sail has been working with the AU Sailing Team and AU Club Sports in an effort to expand our program. Here's a little information about the great program going on down on the DC waterfront!

blog.dcsail.org

DC Sail is a part of the National Maritime Heritage Foundation, who are dedicated to providing and promoting youth involvement in maritime programs. DC Sail is the Community Sailing Center part of that program.

They offer a number of programs, including a high school sailing team, summer programs, and memberships for grown-ups. DC Sail also offers a week-long summer sailing program for older students on the schooner American Spirit.

We're having a great time working out a potential partnership with DC Sail that will include mutual benefits for all of us. As the AU Sailing team is figuring out the logistics of our expanding team, we look forward to all the support we can give and get from DC Sail!
